Geotagging

Geotagging adds location information (spatial references) to data that do not have that information (non-spatial data), as illustrated by the diagram below.

Voyager compares a location name with a known set of coordinates and then adds that location as a geotag to the document. These geotags appear as place names or coordinates, depending on how the item is tagged.

About Gazetteers

Voyager uses gazetteers (geographic dictionaries) when Geotagging content. Users can geotag using a standard gazetteer of 15 million placenames or create a custom gazetteer from their own geospatial data. Users can also geotag content by extracting coordinate information from the document and translating that into a location.

You can also create and use your own custom gazetteer, as outlined in this tutorial: Building and Using a Custom Gazetteer

Configuring Geotagging

To configure Geotagging:

  1. Go to Manage Voyager > Discovery > Discovery Configuration

  2. Select the Geotag tab in the Default Settings section

Geotagging With Gazetteers

Voyager supports two types of gazetteers:

  • Custom Gazetteer - A custom gazetteer is based on specific data in the index that is used as a source of location information for other data.

  • Standard Gazetteer - This is a pre-built gazetteer stored in a separate index in local or remote Voyager instances.
